Creator's Comments:"The feedback I received was a prodding to shoot my stock work in the great outdoors. So this is exactly what I did in my modern UK loadout complete with face paint! The water was cold, the little tiny fish stayed away from my urethra, and I only dropped the remote in the water once. Also, whilst it is a gamble, I left wide aspect ratios because I felt it would helped to have a full scene with me in it. Don't like? Lemme know, I haven't done this before. Weapon is the modern variation of the SA-80 which is the CORRECT current issue main assault rifle for British ground forces. Mine lacks the updated H&K charging handle, but it makes use of an integrated RIS system that you see on modern units, as well as a replica of an EOTech holographic sight. Please ignore the wiring from the mock PEQ box, this is my main airsoft rifle. As a bit of trivia, the girl at the local four quart I got a bottle of soda at afterwards thought I was wearing eyeshadow. I'm not a harlot! I'd never put eyeshadow on that thick!"
Overall, well done. The lights and shadows aren't bad - but it's clear that you had the model turn instead of you moving around him. The light source here is always from the sun on the left. That means when he faces right, his face is shadowed. Sometimes that works and others it doesn't. Maybe next time, you should do a series of the figure facing into the light source and another facing away. Another thing that helps is a reflector. A good collapsable reflector isn't hard to find or expensive, and when used properly is the perfect way to add fill lighting, back lighting, etc. You only need an assistant who can follow your directions. I'd also recommend 3/4 shots too in the mix.
as much as I kept saying over and over "naw, that half up stuff is useless" upon getting one I was actually REALLY pleased with it. It's a much more comfortable front grip. I still have a somewhat strong preference for a standard vertical foregrip myself, but I can see why people love the Magpul design! Also really like the fake EOtech, much more so than my standard cantilevered red-dot.
How can you be contacted for potential commercial uses of your work? I'm an illustrator always looking for good reference, and would be willing to compensate you for commercial use if you would permit it. In this case, I have clients who want me to do paramilitary illustrations which can be hard to get reference for.
Shoot me a note, I'm happy to help. Fair warning though, as both photographer and subject, it'll take me a bit to get everything right when it comes to lighting.
Sorry, I wasn't trying to be mean, I did take the lighting issues to heart; I've dumped hundreds of photos due to their grainy nature over the last year or so.
